Bernard Mutinda Kivava joined SMEP Microfinance Bank PLC as Chief Executive Officer on 18 May 2026. He is a
seasoned microfinance and retail banking executive with over 20 years of leadership experience across East Africa, with
strong expertise in institutional transformation, governance, risk management, resource mobilization, business growth, and
SME banking.
He has successfully led institutional turnarounds, strengthened governance frameworks, improved portfolio performance,
mobilized growth capital, and expanded financial inclusion for micro, small, and medium enterprises. His leadership is
anchored on simplicity, accountability, disciplined execution, innovation, and people development.
At SMEP Microfinance Bank PLC, his focus is on strengthening institutional resilience, deepening customer trust,
improving operational performance, and advancing sustainable financial inclusion.
Academic Qualification
Bernard holds an MBA in Strategic Management from the University of
Nairobi, a Bachelor of Arts degree from Moi University, and a Diploma in Business Management from the Kenya Institute
of Management. He is a Certified Senior Banking Executive in Microfinance and SME Banking Practice and a member of
the Association of Microfinance Institutions of Kenya (AMFI).

- Led strategy, change management, institutional transformation, governance, risk management, talent development
and performance improvement, policy and process reengineering, resource mobilization, product and service
innovation, digitalization of processes to improve on efficiency, stakeholder engagement and operational
performance for a leading microfinance institution in Kenya.
Chief Executive Officer – Letshego Rwanda Limited | June 2012 – April 2015
Provided strategic leadership during the transformation of the institution from a credit-only business into a regulated deposit-
taking microfinance institution, including restructuring, risk controls, process improvement, resource mobilization, people
development, productivity improvement and stakeholder management.
Head of Business Development – Faulu Kenya | January 2011 – May 2012
Oversaw business growth, deposits mobilization, portfolio performance, customer experience, product innovation, and risk
management controls. Earlier at Faulu Kenya, he served in several leadership and operational roles including Area Manager,
Branch Manager, Development Finance Officer, and Project Manager for Micro Deposits Mobilization.
